Broken Spires is the solo electronic music project of Sam Hopgood. After years of playing guitar and drums in rock bands, Sam fell in love with electronic music in the mid 90s at Melbourne’s infamous Dockland raves, which featured artists like Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Roni Size, CJ Bolland, Derrick Carter and Laurent Garnier. Immediately getting inspired, Sam bought his first set of DJ gear and started to immerse himself in the world of electronic music.

With a few years of hard work and dedication Sam went on to play at diverse clubs and bars around Melbourne. Leaving Australia to continue his career as a sound engineer in Shanghai, Sam took a leave of absence from DJing. After returning to Melbourne, Sam began producing music as Broken Spires and has reignited his passion for DJing and performing music. Broken Spires’ sound is a fusion of deep, dark melodies, mashed with emotional intensity and an uplifting feeling.

What inspires you?

Naturally, the music I listen to inspires me a great deal. I’m really inspired by electronic music but also – being a rock pig from way back – I love to get my fill of Swedish metal or I might listen to some hip hop and anything in between. I find inspiration in all forms of music and that translates to writing electronica.

Also, I’m inspired by my friends who are achieving a great deal, particularly in the music industry. It’s great to see people throwing their heart and soul at their passion and getting the results they deserve.

What do you usually start with when preparing for a set?

First thing I look at is the party I’m playing at. Check the vibe and see what sort of music people will be coming to listen to. Then I’ll see what time I playing and start building my set from there. There’s usually a couple of tracks that I just have to play because I love them so much so I build the set around them.

What’s the best advice someone’s ever given you?

The best advice I have been given is to stay true to your own individual sound, whether it be producing original music or even crafting DJ sets. Don’t try to emulate what other people are doing. Be inspired by those you admire but go ahead and create your own unique musical identity.
