Growing up in the mid 90’s rave scene in Nelson, New Zealand, Juan became hooked on the sounds of Hardcore/Jungle and eventually dedicated many years to DJing and producing Drum & Bass. An experiment into the Techno genre six years ago prompted an entire musical shift into the current 4/4 output of ‘Juan Tellez’ and he hasn’t looked back.
Now based in Melbourne, Juan consistently releases Techno (most recently a 3 track EP on Melbourne’s own Machine Label) and plays out regularly in clubs and festivals in Australia, NZ and Europe. Juan’s versatility as a DJ and producer sees him playing across the spectrum of techno, usually leaning towards a darker yet uplifting, atmospheric and grittier sound.
Who is currently your biggest inspiration musically?
Rebekah. Totally formidable as a DJ and producer, plus her candid nature inspires me both on a musical and personal level.
The New Zealand music scene is well know for its bass heavy culture. How has that influenced you in your production and DJing styles?
Funnily enough, I first started producing D&B and found it to be a very ‘stop-start’ process; it never flowed very well for me. When I began experimenting with techno production, my creativity flowed much more – it was and is very natural. Currently, D&B drum and percussion patterns I would say inform my broken techno tracks, plus you can always hear a dub-wise influence throughout my tunes. With DJing, I think some of my quick mixes, double-drops and especially my bass switching come from my time as a Jungle and D&B DJ.
What came first – the techno or the tattoos? Are they connected in any way directly?
The tattoos are by at least four years! They’re not connected directly – but who knows – that could change as I get more down the track.
