Dean Haigh or Hayze as we all like to call him has been a part of the Australian underground music movement since the early 90’s, first as a Gabber DJ, underground event organiser and believe it or not a lighting and stage manager for an iconic Sydney institution Power House Productions. A crew who helped shape and bring the illegal warehouse and party scene into an accepted place by society.
Always chasing the cool music since he was 14 Dean quickly flocked to the Gabber movement of the 90’s. Music that would make the hardest of techno fans quiver in a blubbering mess. After a string of residencies and large parties slamming 200 bpm’s a record, old age kicked in.
Being a ballsy guy by nature; Haigh snaked his first gig at 15 back in ’98 at a Sydney Powerhouse party when he saw that the next DJ was running late. He quickly grabbed someones records and started spinning, kicked off as it was a competition but still made some friends that changed his life.
In 2001 Haigh moved to Melbourne to pursue a career that involved lots of techno and Scott Project (Melbourne loved him). Quickly finding his feet in the Melbourne scene it was not long before Hayze was banging out vinyl at residencies with Elevation, Tuned, Bass Station, Hard Kandy and the occasional slot at the well respected Pharmacy Parties.
Lately Hayze has been delving into production big time and is armed with EP’s up to his ears both for Australian and international labels. Make sure you keep your eyes and ears out for upcoming releases from Hayze, he’s got the future shining bright in front of him.
You became involved in the underground music scene in Sydney as a teenager, what drew you into this world?
I used to kick around with my friends older brothers at school; they started lending me mixtapes and I was hooked. I went to Triple Trouble on my 12th birthday after sneaking out of my window. The party was great, we danced all night and ended up back at a recovery party afterwards where they had decks and that pretty much did it for me.
You have been producing music for quite some time now, can you tell us how your work process normally looks like?
Random would have been my answer 12 months ago, but now it’s a lot more calculated. I have a stack of work on my hard drive that I have written over the last 12 months that I’m refining. Some sessions I focus on that, others times I focus on new ideas and grooves. I find it good to think about what you want to get out of your time when you sit down in the studio.
You’ve recently had ear damage. We know as DJs and composers that it seems like the worst possible injury. How is the condition now and what was it like to have that experience?
Close to the worst news that you can hear (mind the pun) it was intense. I noticed one morning I could hear too well out of my right ear. It started to get worse, so I went to the doctor and it turned out I had a major ear infection. I had to go straight to the hospital and found out I had two tiny holes in my ear drum which affected my hearing. They also told me they were not sure if it would heal and I had to wait for the ear infection to clear before anything got better. Thankfully it did! It was a good experience as it solidified more and more what music means to me and potentially what it would mean without it.
