Will Kroger aka Defwill, is a Brisbane based underground house and techno DJ – remarkably, Defwill is also the only industry DJ in Australia whom is deaf. Comprised of equal parts passion, talent, and determination, Defwill’s musicality brings a truly unique dimension to his craft; almost defying the way we view DJing, music, and sound.
Over the past 7 years, Defwill has worked to develop his skill-set, and has become a regular feature on QLD’s Electronic Music Scene. Armed with a deep understanding of vibrations, waveforms, and track structure – which in essence, virtualizes his ears – Defwill, is a journey-taker. His stylistic approach, draws influence from minimal, emotive, melodic, tribal, and driving grooves, and his mixes are executed with an astonishing kind of precision.
Fast-forward to 2016, and Defwill’s gigography reflects state – wide bookings at the likes of Capulet Bar, Woolly Mammoth, XY2, Faraway Festival, Dark Forest Festival, and the Gold Coast’s annual ‘White Paradise NYE’ event – closing set for the Paradise Stage and Manifest Festival and just recently played in Melbourne at The Railway Hotel, Brunswick. Having supported Local, Interstate and International Artists, such as Bass Kleph (SYD), Steve Ward (MEL), Jamie Stevens (MEL), Dylan Griffith (MEL), Cìrukè, (BNE) Makumba/Darkshire (GR), and Hefty (UK), Defwill’s sights are now set on further growing his newly established ‘Equalita Production’ event brand, and exploring the world of production.
With the future of Defwill still unfolding, it’s inherently clear that Defwill is on a mission to push his own boundaries, whilst using his DJing platform to raise awareness for disability. Defwill, offers a refreshing take on the DJ artform, whilst reverberating a truly inspiring message about music’s ability to bypass communication barriers and limitations, as a universal and boundless language
In regards to being a deaf DJ, how do you go about selecting and mixing tracks?
Mostly just feeling the vibes of each song and feeling the depths of the emotional journey of the artist’s work and passion into the creative composition. Every work has it own identity to express the engagement to the audience.
What is the most rewarding part of being a promoter for you personally?
Making a difference to be honest. I enjoy getting all kinds of demographic identity with same passion of music choice from the promoter’s view. This allows the stockholders to engage with the community that needs extra support to ensure the customers have same equality experience.
Can you please describe your life’s musical journey – what did you grow up with, what influenced you and how did you end up with the sound you have today?
When I was young and throughout my young adulthood, I never had any opportunity or engagement towards me to express my musical identity with public performance to business management. I waited until I was adult and got trained by Harvey (Tony Harvey, manager at Store DJ) in lights and sounds for days.
Life is hard, we all fuck up and make bad choices which makes us learn and grow. Even though I have lost friends and most artists’ lose their friends on daily basis from identity isolation. That’s why it’s to best walk your own walkabout and to take yourself to unknown dimension paths to grow into the identity as of today. Since then, I have met a lot of people that tried numbers of times to teach me and I really take time to learn every day to grow and gain respect from those that know me as of today. The story has only just started to change the cover of the book.
