With over 25 years experience spinning all over Victoria and featuring at all major parties and clubs throughout Melbourne with a roster full of weekly, fortnightly and monthly residences at Eat the Beat at New Guernica, The Workshop, Glamorama, Revolver Upstairs, Captain Melville, Lucky Coq, Big Mouth and The Penny Black, Matty is one of the main players in Melbourne’s music scene. He is also one of the founding members of the infamous Melbourne Techno Collective.
MTC have been a corner stone in the Melbourne techno scene and have been running for over 15 years now. Due to the success that MTC has had, Matty has then gone onto support the likes of Aphex Twin, Laurent Garnier, Juan Atkins, Orbital live, Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Timeline (Underground Resistance), Oscar Mulero, Ricardo Villalobos, Kevin Saunderson, Redshape, Technasia, Cave, Adam Beyer, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Green Velvet, Carl Cox, Ben Sims and many more at large techno events around Melbourne.
Matt is also a member of the Stable Music crew, which is one of the leaders in Melbourne, bringing forward thinking events and electronic music to Melbourne. But he’s not restricted to just one city, Matty has played all around Australia including Adelaide, Sydney, Gold Coast, Hobart and even Sri Lanka, strange but true! For the last 4 years, Matt has been lucky enough to live out one of his life long dreams. He got to play his beloved techno at the home of this amazing genre, in Detroit USA. He was invited by the Detroit Techno Militia to play at the Bang Tech 12th Anniversary party. This party is the warm up party to the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit (DEMF – Movement) and Matt got to share the decks with some of the city’s and the world’s finest every year.
Matty Radovich has cemented his name in the Melbourne scene with guest spots at the largest festivals in Australia for example festivals including Pure, Babylon Festival, Piknic Electronik, Creamfields, V Festival (Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne), Two Tribes, Good Vibrations, Listen Out, Solar, Stereosonic, Kiss My Grass, Sunshine People, Hardware, Future Music Festival, We Love Sounds, Enchanted Forest, Earthcore and more.
One of his big successes was to be handpicked as support act for DJ Shadow’s Outsider show in Melbourne featuring the Gift of Gab at the Forum. Other highlights includes when he got to support the one and only Grandmaster Flash, under his alias Mike Hunt, was well as playing before Common at a Red bull Racing Gala party. He has also supported the likes of many great funk, hip hop, electronic and dance acts like Flying Lotus, Gilles Peterson, Dj Krush, Gaslamp Killer, Clark, Dam Funk, Scuba, Ras G, Africa HiTech, Claude Von Stroke, Hudson Mohawke, Harmonic 313, The Platinum Pied Pipers, 2manydjs, Cassius, just to name a few.
As a long term DJ and artist, you would have gone through many fluctuations in your popularity and personal drive to maintain your presence in the dance music industry. How do you think you have been able to maintained both your relevance and drive in the scene?
I don’t really know how I maintain my relevance and my drive in this scene, I just love playing music to people and making them dance and be happy.
Tell us what you believe to be your personal height of achievement in your career and what lasting effects that has had?
To me I’ve had a few quite a few personal heights. I’ve got to play with DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist a couple of times on different tours, I’ve played techno in Detroit for 5 years in a row, I’ve help run the Melbourne Techno Collective for 15 years with a bunch of awesome cunts! I’ve been a part of Stable Music from the very beginning and seen and done so many fucking awesome projects with them.
I’ve played with and supported some many amazing artists both international and local. Just to name a few; Aphex Twin, Grandmaster Flash, Laurent Garnier, Wu Tang Clan, Common, Juan Atkins, Robert Hood, Orbital live, Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Timeline (Underground Resistance), Flying Lotus, Marco Carola, Dax J, Surgeon, Planetary Assault System Live, DJ Krush, Gilles Peterson, Stacey Pullen, Mike Humphries, Sandwell District (Regis & Function), Oscar Mulero, Ricardo Villalobos, Kevin Saunderson, Hudson Mohawke, Technasia, Adam Beyer, Derrick May, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Green Velvet, Carl Cox, Collabs (Speedy J & Chris Liebing), Steve Rachmad, Vitalic, Detroit Techno Militia, Space Djz, Ben Sims and I could name so many more, but we don’t have all day. So it’s really hard to pin point one point in time. I guess the lasting effects it has had is that people still like what I do and still book to play awesome shows!
If there is one choice you made in your music career that you got the option to change, what would that be and why?
No not really, I mean will make mistakes at different points in time, but I wouldn’t change them. Mistakes are how you learn and better yourself, so I wouldn’t change them.
Do you believe you will ever stop being a part of the music industry?
Well I don’t want to stop being a part of it, so I hope I never stop being a part of it!
