KONTRAST Mini-Mix #13-3 - Brooke Powell

Originally hailing from Manchester, Brooke Powell is a techno producer and DJ residing in Melbourne, Australia. Brooke’s driving and dynamic style has gained much attention both locally and internationally, with releases on Bush Records, Complexed and Orange Recordings.

Dark and raw, yet at times melodic – Brooke’s productions have drawn strong support from techno heavy weights including Carl Cox, Pan-Pot, Drumcomplex and Steve Mulder. Brooke seeks to push boundaries with his sets, creating an atmospheric and energetic dance floor. Consequently, Brooke is rapidly gaining reputation for his unique expression and engagement with techno music.

What is it like becoming a DJ when you’ve grown up with a father who’s a famous DJ and producer? How do you connect with him about it and has he helped you at all?

This is actually a tough one – I wasn’t into techno growing up. Grime and Hip Hop was my thing back in the UK. When I moved to Melbourne I got into the dance scene, and progressively my style got harder. So we didn’t really connect over Techno until I was about 19. Dad is very much my mentor and gives me very honest guidance. I’m very fortunate I have such an experienced individual on my side. Plus I get to steal from his rider so… win win!

What’s your favourite hardware equipment for making dark techno music?

I’ll keep this one short and sweet, it has to be the RMX1000, for all them snare rolls. I’m a massive fan of the Strymon Big Sky Reverb and Elektron A4 at the moment.

You’re a pretty sarcastic guy and you’ve been pretty vocal on various threads online about “Business Techno”. Can you describe what business techno is and what that means to you as a DJ/producer yourself?

Hahaha! I think the term came from some pseudo intellectual RA review of Regal and Amelie Lens’ EP. For me though, it just a bit of fun. Whether I’m DJing, producing or “raving” – I don’t like to over-analyse things. We’re here to enjoy music – save the chin stroking for home listening.
