KONTRAST MINI-MIX #16.3 – JACKSON RUAN

Kontrast Mini-Mix #16.3 - Jackson Ruan

Jackson Ruan is an artist based in Melbourne, Australia and one of the co-founders of Konnekt’d, a techno brand known for their successful events around Melbourne who has hosted artists such as DVS1, Slam, Monoloc, Amelie Lens and many more.

His sound is a combination of soft atmospheric pads, raw field recorded sounds and percussion inspired synths that ultimately expose a deep, driving style.

When did you start DJing, and what or who were your early influences?

From what I recall, my 2 biggest electronic influences during the start of DJing are Luke Slater & Modeselektor. If I had to name my all time biggest musical influences in general, i’d say Nine Inch Nails, they really take the cake in my eyes.

As dedicated DJs, there’s a deeply philosophical question we all must deal with at some point – how to do the mid-set toilet run. What’s your general tactic?

Loop it or get a friend to take over!

The sync button. Go…

Nah…not for me…I love hearing the transition/mix come together…there’s just something about the rawness when the beat is ever off so slightly and you can hear it all fall into place. I do love seeing the sync used in a way where loops are used to create tension and buildups as well as add whole new separate elements to an already existing mix instead of it being used sluggishly.

KONTRAST COLLECTIVE is a group of creative spirits who loves to combine raw sounds, dark, thumping beats and intense, edgy musical experiences with extraordinary visual elements in an experimental and innovative way. Apart from organising events we love to shine light on Australia’s best upcoming and veteran DJ’s. The sixteenth round of the KONTRAST Mini-Mix Series will run from April 3rd to 24th, with an exclusive podcast from each artist along with a short interview to get to know them better.
